Résumé: During the Cold War, Logan took on an assignment to aid nuclear scientist Dimitri Suhkarov and his daughter Viktoria in their escape from the Soviet Union. At one point, Logan sent them ahead across a stone bridge while he lay in wait for their pursuers, Ilya Dubromovitch Skorzorki (code-named Volk) and three Russian soldiers. Logan dispatched the soldiers, but was shot by the third before he killed him. Although his accelerated healing was repairing his wounds, he still wasn't fully recovered when he caught up with Volk, and could not prevent him from killing Suhkarov. Volk's mission completed, he allowed Logan and Viktoria to continue their escape.
In the present, Volk is hired by a Zero Tolerance officer to assassinate Wolverine. Soon, having caught wind of this development through her position in the Canadian Secret Service, Viktoria meets with Logan to warn him. She gives him a file detailing Volk's career and his subjection to DNA enhancement resulting in a mutation whereby he can transform into a werewolf-like creature. To her dismay, Logan tells Viktoria he will take on Volk alone.
Logan goes to an old favorite bar to wait for Volk to find him. Soon, Volk does arrive, and before long the two are brawling, Volk becoming more lupine as the fight progresses. Logan, however, keeps his own inner beast in check. After slashing the bartender's throat, Volk tries to goad Logan into losing control, but when the mutant refuses, the lycanthrope leaps out through the bar window. Realizing Volk intends to go after Viktoria, Logan gives chase, but arrives at her hotel room too late to prevent him from abducting her. There, the phone rings and Logan answers. Volk tells him to meet them at the stone bridge.
Within two days, Wolverine arrives at the rendezvous point, where he is attacked by the lupine Volk. As they battle, and Wolverine fights more furiously, Volk becomes more and more wolf-like. Wolverine then understands Volk has gotten what he truly wanted: to fully become a wolf, forever leaving his human life behind. Wolverine and Viktoria watch as he joins a wolf pack, but she won't accept this as a conclusion. As she drives away, leaving Wolverine behind, she vows to hunt Volk down.
